Ten Lessons I Learned Building My First Data Warehouse

Geoff Johnson, BI Developer / Analyst Custom Data Systems, Inc.

Over the past nine months I have been focused on one task: building a data warehouse from the ground up. Because SQL Server 2008 Express was my baseline for development tools, I had to get creative with pure T-SQL -- SSIS simply wasn't in my toolbox. Version 1.0 of the data warehouse is now essentially complete, but getting to this point has been a learning process. In this session I will share the top ten lessons I have learned about data warehousing in general and about how to make it work even without SSIS and other tools.

About Geoff:
Geoff is the BI Developer for Custom Data Systems, Inc., a software company offering data management for CPA associations and similar non-profit groups. He has been working with SQL Server for over fifteen years, with a focus on BI and SSRS for 6+ years. Since January of 2016 he has been designed and implemented a data warehouse solution for CDS, Inc. He is an active member of the Richmond SQL Server User Group and counts it a privilege to share what he has learned the hard way with others so they don't have to. He also occasionally blogs about his lessons learned.
